In the late 1800's, an Englishman by the name of Charles Harcourt settled the area today known as Bear's Den.  In the early years, a dairy herd gazed on irrigated alfalfa fields along Jarre Creek and wheat crops thrived on the higher pastures.  Eventually the entire ranch was converted to pasture used during the summer for running yearling cattle sold each fall.  In 1903, the Harcourt's daughter Esme was born.  She grew up to be an adept horsewoman and tales abound that she was equally good with a revolver!  The home she built in 1928 still stands near the entrance to Bear's Den.  Devoted to the ranch, Esme lived there until her death in 2000.

Today, Bear's Den is preserved as an exclusive, gated community with a limited number of expansive sites available for construction of custom residences.  These estate homes are required to adhere to HOA Architectural Control Covenants specifying quality, native materials, color palettes and landscaping installations in keeping with the unique legacy of Bears Den.
